anti-telemarketing script

anti-telemarketing script
brilliant script for discombobulating telesales people. But in the Uk we can register with a gvt site to have calls blocked: telling the (now very few) cold-callers who still hit on us that they are infringing this always makes them back off. So I'm unlikely to need to use this.

Museum of Hoaxes

Museum of Hoaxes
nicely organised into user-friendly categories - but is it all one big hoax? Hmm - Grauniad is spelled wrongly.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar
This seems to work really well. I tested by putting in my name, very modestly. It came up with books and papers in order of citation, one click to find who cites.
There are some anomalies. Often a book/article appears under several variant headings. A working paper that came up in ISI/World of Science as my most cited publication didnt appear - maybe its listed as "I Miles" not "Ian Miles".
But this is quibbling. Its a great resource!

BTW, new versions of Firefox (excellent browser) and Thunderbird (email) are now downloadable from Mozilla. Try them!!

Supervolcano conspiracy theories
While looking for information on supervolcanos (don't ask) I cam upon this smashing site - it has secret societies, government conspiracies against patriotic Americans, the Russians beaming Tesla rays, and everything execpt UFOs (aah). The author claims to have been asked for help by the BBC! and seems to think that a "volatile area" will be affected (as opposed to most of the planet getting devasted when it blows).

Two motifs in the style of Arvo Part
well, not quite - Part never has such a beat! Rather like Michael Nyman does the Partsman Contract. I like it.

NewsForge | Can open source software free your mind?

NewsForge | Can open source software free your mind?

This refers to a free Java tool for "mind management". I'm not one of those who uses such tools for note-taking or composition, but I have been extremely impressed bv others' use of the methods for summarising group discussions...

The new system is at http://freemind.sourceforge.net/
previously I've played wioth early and thus free versions (from cover discs) Of Mind managers for Windows at:

NPR : Creators at Carnegie : Randy Newman

NPR : Creators at Carnegie : Randy Newman
Some all-time favourites here (Good Ol' Boys etc) along with nice commentaries by the man himself - and many fewer interruptions than poor Caetano suffers.

NPR : Creators at Carnegie : Caetano Veloso and David Byrne

NPR : Creators at Carnegie : Caetano Veloso and David Byrne
two one hour concerts (with annoying intros) Amazing to hear Caetano singing Davis' "The Revolution" - which BTW was featured on a fantastic live concert on BBC4 TV a while ago, when will this be repeated? Good enough reason to get a DVD recorder...

Download some excellent Robert Hunter MP3s here. Oh for Tales of the Great Rum Runners and Tiger Rose...

Welcome to Outdoor Alternative

Welcome to Outdoor Alternative Basic (ie not shop!) but excellent campsite on Anglesey, where we just spent a few days.

In Lake District, recently had a good weekend at Fisherground farm:

Both have great pubs within a short walk. And great walks over longer distances.

RegCleaner

RegCleaner
This is a godsend - it lets you wipe out unwanted registry items that UNINSTALL often misses - like the stuff that REALPLAYER puts on your system (that sems to have interfered with other audio apps judging from the problems they've had since I opted for the last Realplayer upgrade). the interface is easy, and provides a clear snapshot of what is installed there.

Solid Converter PDF - Download

Solid Converter PDF - Download
This converts PDF into RTF format. The online version is just a trial, but there have been cover magazine discs on PC mags that give a version of the full product. Example of use - I was sent a PDF document today that would only print in Chinese characters for some reason, likewise when cut and pasting. But Solid converted to Roman scriot, and I could then size and print out the text to read.
It has also done the seeming impossible, which is capture a table of data into a form I could spreadsheet.

Firefox - The Browser, Reloaded
I am finding this a great browser, and the extensions and skins that are available add much functionality (eg Google bar, blog this!) and fun.

jetAudio

jetAudio
Jet Audio Basic is an excellent free audio (and other media) player, with the neat facility of being able to record whats coming through your sound card into realplayer and wma formats (and others, but not mp3). It takes a little while to master the interface, but then it's very powerul.

A strange thing has happened since I upgraded RealPlayer a couple of days ago, which is that Jet seems to have gone invisible. It still plays files, but I cant see the control panel, and it is invisible to an "Alt-Tab" command. This means that I cant do some of the things I'd like to!

Live365 - Starship Radio

Live365 - Starship Radio
Despite the title, this station plays a great deal of Jefferson AIRPLANE and related Kantner, Slick etc. (I've yet to hear any Hot Tuna though).
